The Women’s Centre at Durham College & UOIT exists to educate and empower women. It creates a campus culture that values equality, and celebrates the differences women make to society.

What services are offered by the Women’s Centre?

There are four main facets of the Women’s Centre:

  • Drop-in space: The Women’s Centre is a safe, fun place for women and men to meet friends, learn about women’s issues and empower one another.

  • Resources: The resource bank offers a number of brochures, books, journals, magazines and research articles. Items are available for two-week checkouts.

  • Advocacy: The centre serves as a primary resource for peer support, crisis intervention and information and referral services. The staff can refer students to campus and community organizations that offer guidance and answers to your questions if we are unable to.

  • Events: The centre hosts gender-specific events including events about women’s equality issues, violence against women initiatives, safety planning and life-skills development while striving to provide education to all members of the campus.
Why do we need a Women’s Centre on campus?

Women need a space of their own on campus to gather and work for change within a college/university setting because:

  • Sexual assaults against women occur on campus every year.
  • Women have unique concerns and needs.
  • Gender stereotyping and gender-exclusive language are predominant features of many classrooms, textbooks and curricula.
  • Women of colour, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and women with disabilities face double discrimination.
Is the Centre for women only?

Absolutely not! The Women’s Centre welcomes both men and women. All students are encouraged to use its resources and attend programs. We are called the Women’s Centre because our mission is to promote the advancement of women and their well-being; a mission that men are invited to actively advocate and support.

Is your service confidential?

Yes, our service is free and confidential. Whether you talk to us over the telephone, face-to-face or by e-mail, your confidentiality is strictly maintained. Confidentiality is vital to our mission and emphasized in all our training.
