New Women’s Centre offers a safe place for women in need
Access to services will help all students for years to come

Oshawa, ON-. —The first of its kind on campus, the new Women’s Centre opened on September 14. It will give students a safe haven to receive confidential counseling and help in abusive situations. The new centre will have a campus food service for students in need and will also provide space for club offices.

Allison Hector-Alexander, director of the new centre wants to raise awareness surrounding issues of abuse in a wide variety of situations including date rape and spousal abuse.

“If you know of a woman who might be afraid to access service, we can provide them with confidential support” Said Hector-Alexander.

The Student Association listened to concerns of students and they have incorporated them all into one centre. The fully stocked food service answers the need of students who are burdened financially with the cost of living and the cost of going to school. The campus food service gives them an emergency option when they cannot afford to eat.

“The women’s centre is a great example of what students can accomplish on our campus. We are now able to offer many more services to students” said Fraser McArthur Student Association President.

The new centre also offers space for students to study and a place to watch television.

The Student Association vision is to ensure student voices are heard on campus. This vision was brought to life with the creation of the new Women’s Centre
